Transforming my home and the letterpress workshop into Christmas magic is half of the joy of this season. I love seeing all the sprinkling throughout my spaces and little corners. It's such a joy and brings the nostalgia of the holidays into visual moments.
One way I celebrate is also by making our spaces smell like the holidays. There is something so transformative about scents that remind us of childhood Christmases.
This year, I've created these wonderful aromas in the home with essential oil blends as well as a stovetop simmer pot from foraged goodies.
Christmas Cabin
- 50ml glass spray bottle
- 10 drops of Orange essential oil
- 10 drops of Northern Black Spruce essential oil
- 5 drops of Pine essential oil
- 5 drops of Cinnamon essential oil
- 5 drops of Vanilla essential oil
- Fill bottle with distilled water
Winter Wonder
- 50ml spray bottle
- 10 drop Pine essential oil
- 5 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops Cedarwood essential oil
- 5 drops Cypress essential oil
- Fill bottle with distilled water
You can also put essential oil blends in a diffuser, which I often opt for, but there is something simple and nice about walking through the house and spraying the beautiful scents, like I'm sprinkling Christmas in every room to start the day :).
A Simmer Pot:
Simmering a pot on the stove using naturally collected items and christmas-time ingredients! My personal favourite is:
- 2 pine cones from my back yard (they still have pine sap on them)
- A few cedar springs from my back yard
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 5-10 cranberries
I put them all in a small saucepan, fill with water, enough to cover the items, bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. The fragrance is stunning and no candle can live up to the real raw ingredients. Play with the recipe according to what you have available to you. You can add sliced orange, sliced apples, different spices, etc. Make sure to keep an eye on it and not let the water completely evaporate and the ingredients burn.
Happy decorating and making the house a home.
